Teams should trade out of the first round

Friday, April 2nd, 2010

This isn’t the way sports are supposed to be. You are supposed to be terrible so you can get a high pick so that high pick can help your franchise get better. It works in basketball pretty well, but in the NFL it is horrible right now. Teams should get out of the first round or at least the top 15 picks whenever possible.

I’m not saying the talent isn’t there to help teams but teams are hurt more by the ridiculous amounts of money that are given to unproven rookies when that money could be spent on free agents who can help a team right away and the players have already proven themselves. Why should the Rams draft Sam Bradford and have to pay him 20 million dollars up front when he’s never played a down in the nfl and they have so many other holes to fill. They’d be better off trading that pick for 2 or 3 picks in the other rounds because it would be more cost effective and fill more spots.

Of course other teams in the league know this but they can’t do anything about it. Teams aren’t going to trade the Rams to get Sam Bradford because they know what it will cost them and what they’ll have to give up to get him.

In a sense the Rams are trapped by having the first pick and that’s the exact wrong thing that they need and the NFL needs right now.
