Heisman race is a snoozer

Friday, October 30th, 2009

I can’t remember a year when the Heisman candidates were this boring. Sure Florida is winning and all but Tebow isn’t putting up any numbers that would warrant consideration for this award. Colt McCoy is in the same boat. Sure these kids are winners and leading their teams but stat wise this is absolutely boring.

Tebow in his last game was 12-22 with 2 ints but for some reason he gets all the credit when his team wins. Colt McCoy had his best game of the year last week but other players put those numbers up all the time.

The player who I think should be leading the way is Mark Ingram from Alabama. He’s a great running back putting up great numbers in the toughest conference in college football. He had his signature game against South Carolina by running for nearly 250 yards. I love the kid. He’ll end up around 1500 yards and deserves every consideration considering how well his team is playing.

Another one who is having a great season is Jimmy Clausen for Notre Dame. His numbers dwarf Tebow’s and McCoys and he’s played a good schedule also and his team is winning. I wish they’d lose every game but they aren’t.

Here is what I’m saying, we are missing Sam Bradford and Colt McCoy from last year and that one guy who just comes in and takes the trophy. I don’t think it will happen this year but if Tebow wins the award and throws 14 touchdown passes and runs for another 10 scores then i’m going to be very upset.

Delhomme makes Grossman look All-Pro

Wednesday, October 28th, 2009

John Fox announced today that Jake Delhomme will remain as the Panthers starting qb. This despite Delhomme leading the world in turnovers. He turns the ball over more than a 10 year old girls basketball team with a full court press going for both teams. It’s a joke and his team is suffering. Coach Fox announced that ‘Delhomme gives us the best chance to win”. How does he know that? How will he know until someone is benched and something else takes place? It’s my least favorite line. Jason Campbell in Washington is at least young and still learning, but Delhomme is showing that he is old and washed up and if i’m coaching I’m not putting my job in his hands without at least trying something else.

The Panthers feature a great running back in DeAngelo Williams but how can that guy be effective when teams are daring Delhomme to pass the ball. They will put 8 guys in the box all day and let him try to beat them with his arm. Steve Smith can’t be happy and I’m wishing he was a Bear at this point.

In the title I said that Delhomme is making Grossman look All-Pro and it’s true. Grossman would do better in Carolina but we’ll never know because Delhomme gives them the best chance to win a game. Right, coach?

Why are the Redskins waiting?

Monday, October 26th, 2009

Jim Zorn is a sitting duck. He knows he’s a sitting duck. I don’t know what the ‘Skins are waiting for other than to finish an expected losing season playing against the weakest schedule in the history of the NFL.

Zorn is a football guy and he was one of my favorite players when I was a kid. I loved him at Qb and was often him in my backyard as my brother was Steve Largent. Steve Largent is nowhere to be found here and the Redskins just aren’t getting it done.

This team had some expectations after spending a fortune of some offseason pickups and the problem hasn’t been the defense. The problem with the ‘Skins is that they can’t score the ball and that starts at QB. Jason Campbell isn’t the answer and needs to be replaced because it’s broke. People ask all the time what I think about changing qb’s and there comes a time when you have to cut them loose and the time is now in Washington. However, the Redskins have an old man as the backup that has proven over and over that he should be a backup. While the team spent millions of dollars on defense this season it neglected to back up the one player that everyone had questions about coming into the season.

Jim Zorn is done but is going about this with his head held high. This will be his last head coaching job and I feel bad for him. If the ‘Skins had Jay Cutler or even Kyle Orton they’d be winning games and be in a good position in their division. Now they are just going to ride the season out and give us another loser in Washington. Nice Job Dan Snyder.

Sam Bradford has to be 2nd guessing now

Wednesday, October 21st, 2009

I was amongst thousands of fans who questioned Sam Bradford’s thinking when he decided to go back to school when he could’ve gone to the NFL and been the top pick in the draft. I was amongst thousands who thought that the risk wasn’t worth the reward and that the negatives were far more than the positives.

Me and a thousand others were right: Sam Bradford is going to have shoulder surgery and end his season.

Early in the year when Byu knocked Bradford out you could immediately question the choice. I know that Oklahoma had national title hopes and he was the returning Heisman winner but that still doesn’t make sense. If you are a computer genius going to college and IBM or Cisco calls you and offers you 40 million dollars GUARANTEED to leave school and come work for them then you would go. It wouldn’t matter what the situation was in that case because you would go and say “I’ll go back later and get my degree if I want to”. Why would you say no when that is going to be your chosen field anyway and the offer isn’t guaranteed to be there in a year? We’d all take it.

Sam didn’t take it and suffered a major injury to him most valuable asset and that’s his arm. I feel terrible for the kid because it didn’t turn out like he wanted. His team has lost a number of games and he will miss the rest of the year. He’ll still be a first round pick if the surgery goes ok and he’ll still probably still sign a multi million dollar contract but this choice undoubtedly cost him in multiple ways.

Matt Stafford got 41 million guaranteed dollars to lose with the Detroit Lions. Sam Bradford has an insurance policy in case this happened but it isn’t for 40 million.

Coaches that have to go

Tuesday, October 20th, 2009

Norv Turner
Jeff Fisher
Dick Jauron

I know that Norv Turner starts our poorly every year before his team rebounds but this guy should be just an offensive coordinator. He’s had more chances to coach a team than someone should be allowed and he’s always blown some great chances. This is no different. This team underachieves constantly and has given away LT’s great years and chances at winning a title. Let him go and start over, but let him run the offense.

Jeff Fisher is a great NFL coach that just needs a change of scenery. After the teams 59-0 loss to New England in the snow it became apparent that the time has come for a new voice in the Tennessee locker room. Fisher is a winner and will end up on his feet somewhere and turn that team around wherever he goes, but he needs to be done in Tennessee because it just isn’t working anymore.

Dick Jauron: Dick has had his chances but he’s just not going to produce a winner wherever he coaches. He’s a great guy that people love. He has integrity according to those around him but he’s not going to win games for your football team. Buffalo is a tough job in a tough conference but Marv Levy won there for years so it can be done. Buffalo needs to cut the strings and move on to someone who is young and excited to be a coach. They’ll probably pull a 20 year old off of New England’s staff for all we know.

Crabtree ready to go for 49ers

Thursday, October 8th, 2009

I’m actually kind of happy this happened. See, I have Crabtree on my fantasy football team and I didn’t have the guts to waive the guy. I could have twice but since I haven’t lost yet during our season I figured that I would keep him and see if he could help me later in the year. I’m happy I did.

But as Billy Madison put some eloquently when talking to Miss Lippy: “Here’s the part of the story that I don’t understand”- Why did this take so long? It has been well documented that the two sides hadn’t talked for 3 weeks. During those 3 weeks the 49ers accused the Jets of tampering. They have also played great football and really should be undefeated still. They have been getting great play from nearly everyone and Coach Singletary didn’t ever once comment on the Crabtree situation other than saying that he wants players who want to play there. Then all of a sudden the two sides start talking on Monday night and by Wednesday the deal is signed? What are we missing and why did this take so long to get done? Why wait 3 weeks to talk? There is so much to this story we haven’t heard and may never hear but it’s been interesting to say the least.

Every team could use a talent like Crabtree and I think he’ll be a very good pro receiver. He’ll be a great fit for the 49ers and he’ll walk into a situation where the team is winning without him so he won’t have a lot of pressure. I expect that in a few weeks he’ll be catching a few balls and starting to make an impact and for my teams sake I sure hope he does.

Rashard Mendenhall where have you been?

Tuesday, October 6th, 2009

I don’t hide that I’m a giant Illinois fan even though I should based on how they are playing this season, but one of my favorite all time Illini is Rashard Mendenhall. He was a great college runner who I thought would be a great pro runner as well. He’s always had a case of the fumbles and I expect that to creep back in here with him playing more and more but he’s a game changer and we finally got to see it.

I was really looking forward to the Steelers game Sunday night just to watch him play and he didn’t disappoint. He hit the holes hard and ran hard and didn’t go down on first contact. He has breakaway speed also so it isn’t like he’s just a 2-4 hole type of back.

What do the Steelers do when Willie Parker comes back? They have to stick with Mendenhall and let him play now. The door opened up and he finally burst through it and looks like he is to stay. Teams will now gear up a bit more to shut him down but the Steelers just learned that they have a qb who can throw for 300 yards a game and a back that can run for a 100 at the same time and that’s something to worry about for the other AFC teams.

Nice work Rashard and it’s about time.
