Football Training: 2 Minute Offense

Monday, June 30th, 2008

We are asked consistently by coaches about 2 minute offenses and how to have a structured system in place. We get asked enough that I thought I would feature a product on www.touchdownskills.com that answers the coaches for coaches to use.

The 2 minute Offense is a DVD created by Rob Chudzinski who was a part of 4 of the University of Miami’s national championships. The reason I love the DVD is because of the focus on the 2 minute drill. It doens’t take hours to set up or beat the point to death. This is a 45 minute dvd on setting up your 2 minute offense from the beginning to the end. When I say beginning I’m talking about the planning and the meetings and when i say the end I’m talking about seeing the entire process through. A good 2 minute offense is based on preparation, planning and practice and this DVD covers those very well.

As a beginning coach this dvd is perfect for you. If you are an experienced coach it is beneficial to fill in the blanks. Because it is so detailed it can only enhance what you are already doing. Get it and try it and you will see a big difference and only enhance your coaching.

Don Imus is an idiot

Friday, June 27th, 2008

I know this is a bit of old news but my computer has been down and I’ve been dying to comment on this guy and situation.  He says the other day that Pacman Jones is treated the way he is because he is black.  Then claims the next day that it was an attempt at sarcasm.  I’ve listened to IMUS before and know what sarcasm is and I have my own opinion on what he did.

I think Don Imus is the guy that has to go out of his way to prove he is not racist.  I imagine him being the guy that is now claiming all sorts of black friends and loudly commenting how beautiful Halle Berry is so everyone can hear.  I think he is the guy that is like a politician and is shortly going to be outspoken for Obama as President if he isn’t already.  I personally don’t think he meant anything bad by his comments the other day and everything he says is under a microscope right now and always on topics that involve race, but he needs to know when to shutup.  All the baby kissing in the world won’t do him any good if he continues to open his mouth about anything related to race in the United States.

Football Training: Receivers and Running Backs Skills

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

We have a lot of players asking about specific drills for their position with none more popular than the receiver and running back positions.  We’ve got a very good training DVD that we refer and I thought I’d give it a mention here.

Todd Norman has put together a 6 week training program that focuses on quickness, speed and burst with a bunch of agility mixed in.  It is called Position Specific Training for Football: Receivers and Running Backs. It is very well done and each drill is explained in great detail.  He does a great job of explaining why each drill is so important to do.  This isn’t something that will bore you either as the DVD is only 35 minutes long.  In my opinion it is perfect in length because any longer you have to watch it over and over to get the full grasp of it all.

Timing is right for the DVD right now as it is about 6 weeks before most schools are getting ready for off season football.  If you are a high school athlete looking at getting noticed then it can’t hurt to get this.  As I like to say, it is never a bad investment when a potential scholarship is on the line.

Notre Dame Renews Contract…Wake me in 2015

Thursday, June 19th, 2008

This is ridiculous.  Do you remember sitting through the end of the Willingham era and then last year watching the Golden Domers just get smoked?  Why are they on tv this much?  I’m serious.  Are they America’s Team?  No.  Are they that good in reality?  No and they haven’t been for years.  I’m sick of it.  There is nothing worse for me than having them be the only choice for a football game on a saturday afternoon and they happen to be getting beat by Air Force.

The rumors have the contract be in the amount of 9 million a season and that makes me sick.  Notre Dame gets their own contract like pro teams get their own channels and it is time to stop.  When is this going to be considered an unfair advantage?  After all this is the greatest recruiting coup of all time.  Who else can say that no matter if we win or lose every game of yours will be nationally televised, even if we suck?

I’m a college football fan and i know that conferences are going toward their own channels and trying to do all they can to get an advantage.  This has been going on for years already and I’d rather watch two top level division 2 teams play each other than this garbage.

NFL and Steroids

Monday, June 16th, 2008

I love watching NFL films and listening to the great voices of the past covering the old time football players. The way the announcer, the late John Facenda, called those games was amazing. “The Green Bay Packers” was always said so slow and perfectly and the way he would describe the “great Bart Starr” was so memorable to me. I was amazed at how Jack Lambert would put a hurting on people and opposing running backs despite his size. I saw ‘Mean’ Joe Greene just run over lineman on his way to the QB. Then I go thinking about the whole thing and wondered ‘What happened?’

I’m serious…Just like baseball players got all big in the 90’s and started hitting monster home runs and putting up amazing numbers, football players are doing the same thing. No they aren’t producing greater stats that can’t be explained because of systems, but these people are giant. I’m sick of the excuse that we have workout equipment and techniques that those players didn’t have because these guys are on stuff and people seem to turn a blind eye. Merriman gets suspended for steroids and people just seem to shake it off. It’s a sign people that we need to start paying attention to. ‘Mean’ Joe Greene would be a small guy by today’s standards. I believe in the bigger faster stronger mentality of it all to a degree but not what it is coming to today.

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The NFL is the next league to be up to it’s nose in trouble with illegal substances and it’s only a matter of time.

Chris Henry Suspended for the season

Sunday, June 15th, 2008

I wrote earlier about Chris Henry being no Einstein and that is no doubt after it was announced that Henry will miss the entire season after violating the behavior policy set in the collective bargaining agreement.

This has to set some sort of standard for other players to avoid as done the Pac Man Jones fiasco.  Talent alone isn’t going to save someone a roster spot as it used to.  Henry has all the tools and talent to be a great receiver in the league and it may never be shown now.  The guy has thrown away literally millions of dollars because of his inability to control his behavior in certain situations.  Pac Man is the same.  These guys grew up and played college ball with everyone always telling them they would be pros and when they got here they thought they had made it.  Both are nearly out of the NFL and not even out of their 20’s.  Players need to really grasp the fact that they are lucky to be in the league and that it can set you up for life if done correctly, if not done correctly it can mark you for life as one who let it all slip away.

I don’t pretend to know these two individuals but this isn’t the type of behavior that you’ll ever see from LT or the Mannings.  Some players just understand their role as an athlete and a role model and do it better than others.

Football Training: Strength Shoe

Wednesday, June 11th, 2008

I know I talk about this product a lot but I believe in it that much.  I’ve read reviews by people who claim these shoes don’t work but they work very well if they are used correctly.  I have seen first hand what they can do for people who use them consistently because they did amazing things with me and I had one of the original pairs.  My pair was a low top version and was white and very basic and they were great.  I wore those things out and saw a definite marked improvement in my speed, quickness and first step.  I can’t speak highly enough of the Strength Shoe.  That was nearly 20 years ago and they have improved so much over the years with a better shoe and better science behind them.  If you are contemplating purchasing the Strength Shoe, I suggest that you give it a shot and put them to use.  They won’t work for anyone on a shelf or for anyone who is too embarrassed to train with them.  If you are results driven then give them a try and you, like me, will see the results from them.

NFL Notes: Benson Waived and Goodbye to Strahan

Monday, June 9th, 2008

The NFL lost a hall of fame defensive end today when Michael Strahan decided it was time to retire after 15 great years in the NFL.  This was very predictable because if you are going to go out you go out on top winning the trophy and not hanging on for dear life to a career that was dying down anyway.  Strahan is a personality that we will see on tv for years so it makes sense for him to leave.  He is a Hall of Fame player and I’m happy I got to watch him play for most of my adult life.  It’s been a pleasure Michael…

On another note, it hasn’t been a pleasure watching Cedric Benson try to play for the Bears the last few years because he’s been terrible.  I was actually happy today, as a fan, that the Bears cut him today but sad today for the person.  He’s had a terrible offseason trying to recover from his injury last year and at the same time multiple ‘alleged’ offenses involving alcohol.  The Bears had to be secretly happy that this took place because now they could cut ties cleanly and nobody would fault them.  Benson gets to start over in the CFL or the Arena league or as a 3rd team back in Buffalo.  It looks like a win win.  The Bears lineman are happy because now maybe their own running back won’t keep drilling them in the back instead of the hole.  Seriously, imagine how glad Olin Kreutz is and how unhappy his chiropractor is.  I’m a Bear fan and this is a happy day because I get to move on and give up on another failed Bear top 10 draft choice.  Keep it up guys…

College Football Recruiting

Monday, June 2nd, 2008

What is it about college football and early committments that don’t stick?  I’ve touched this before but these guys need to do something different.  Basketball has 2 signing periods and it seems to help but college football seems to be a little behind on everything from the National Championship to figuring out how to straighten out the recruiting mess that we have.

Some would say that it isn’t a mess but any time you have a kid go on 3 visits and commit to all 3 programs you have issues.  A commitment should mean something…be binding in some way.  What do we teach these kids?  Sure they want to commit so that they are locked in if something happens but they are expecting something from the school that the school is only hoping to get from them.  It should be more.  Imagine if the schools could offer commitments and then pull them whenever.  They can but they don’t.  Kids do it all the time however and it isn’t right.

I understand that recruiting is a competitive game with coaches and some offer scholarships more freely than others and they risk losing some commits along the way but the kids are most important and the current system only teaches them that their word isn’t really that strong and it should be their strongest trait.
